journey to nicaragua! wooh!

hey guys! as some of you know, this summer i am traveling to nicaragua to take part in a multi-cultural exchange. i’m traveling with a program called amigos de las americas, which has a very legit and extremely professional webpage which I encourage all of you to check out because a) it’s got some amazing footage, b) you can make sure that I’m not just pulling your leg and trying to scam you, and c) you might want to join me next year! who knows!! during my six week stay in nicaragua i will be living with a host family in a rural community, speaking only Spanish and local indigenous languages, as well as broadening the horizons of my cultural understandings, learning cultural sensitivity, and generally working hard with amazing people. i’ll also be working on a number of projects that the community desires – these could be anything from providing roofing for a school to building a communal garden for children. it all depends on what the community wants, which is the most amazing part of amigos to me – it’s not a bunch of americans imposing their will on others; rather, we serve merely as catalysts to speed up the process and get people involved!

In order to continue being a part of this awesome program, however, i have to fundraise three thousand and two hundred dollars ($3200) by May 1^st. which is pretty tough to do when you come from a single parent low income family. if i don’t raise the money, the only other option would be to drop of the program, which isn’t a great idea either because i would still be legally obligated to pay them an extra one thousand dollars on top of the four grand i’ve already paid. so I am asking for donations! plus, since amigos is an 501© nonprofit organization, all donations are tax deductible! (awesome!)
